A short speech on the occasion of Fatiha for the 'Urs of Dr. Zahurul Hassan Sharib made in the Zahuri
Khanqa, Trieste on the evening of January 23rd 2003 by Jamiluddin Morris Zahuri. The speech was
simultaneously translated into Italian for the Italian speaking guests by Haseena Corrado.

Dr. Zahurul Hassan Sharib was born and passed most of his life in India - he did not seek fame and
fortune, nor wealth nor glory.

He was a man of simple habits - never happier than when surrounded by his many books, or reading
the newspaper, or taking his early morning walk alone. He was a man of religious disposition but he did
not flaunt his religious beliefs or practice before others. His was a quiet, deep, faith.

He loved those who sought him out with sincere hearts -and he loved them deeply. He sought to guide
and assist them through life's vicissitudes. Many were those whom he relieved of the burden of
bewilderment and worry, of stress and strain, and of agitation or anxiety. Instead he gave them peace
of mind, inner satisfaction and joy, calmness and contentment - and above all he awoke in them the
capacity to love and be loved. To love not selfishly, but as he loved - as indeed Lord Jesus, the holy
Prophet Muhammed, and all the prophets and saints loved, without expecting anything in return.

He had a vision, an inspiration, that life, for mankind could be more than it seemed, in fact that to "live
better" was not an impossible dream but within the capacity of a man or woman.
We breathe, we eat, we procreate but as much can be said of the animals. For him (Zahurmian) this
was not 'better living' - 'better living' was rather to fulfill the potential of a person to be fully human. To
really live, was to love, and to love was to live - and to 'live better'. He saw clearly that so many people
passed the days of their life seeking here and there for ways to compensate for something which was
lacking. He identified that missing and essential element as nothing but love.
People, he observed, sought to fill the void with acquisitions, with wealth, with fame with transient glory
or passing excitements or illusory experiences - but for him this was not the way of 'better living'.

Zahur Mian did not dictate to people that they should do this, or that; to follow this or that particular
practice, he simply sought to, and succeeded in, waking within them the latent capacity to love - which
alone, as nothing else can, gives quality to life whatever the station or situation of the particular
person. This was his message and inspiration - its implication spread well beyond the individual's
benefit for when we love as we should love not only our near and dear ones but all society benefits.

Such a love becomes universal in its nature - indeed Mevlana Rumi maintained that the whole universe
turned on account of the love of its Creator.

It is a God given gift to man, and in it are contained all the other qualities that we respect and cherish.
Qualities such as gratitude, tolerance, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, patience, wisdom, humility,
generosity and justice. By means of love we become close to God. By means of love the secrets of the
universe become ours.
The one who opens to us the inexhaustible treasure of love which was hidden within us - is the one
who deserves our eternal love and gratitude. Such a person was Dr. Zahurul Hassan Sharib - Zahur
Mian.

So we pray that Almighty God keep him ever in His mercy. We witness that during his lifetime he kept
the promises to his own guide Hazrat Nawob Saheb, that he he conveyed the message of Khawaja
Muinuddin Hasan Chishti faithfully - and acknowledge that it is now we who have 'promises to keep and
miles to go before we sleep', to honour not only his memory, but the indisputable fact that he lives still.

So I cannot finish without acknowledging the tireless endeavours of Qamaruddin Corrado and his
beautiful wife Haseena and their lovely daughters Sameena and Ameena, to continue his work. And I
thank them from the heart for their hospitality and generosity in hosting this auspicious occasion.

Amin.

The guests were also thanked for attending the occasion.
